Valery Guzman Prof. Klock ENG 321 - 001 Discrimination, Anti-Feminism, and Gender Inequality In Films Women power has increased throughout the 20th and 21st century by means of statutory laws, legislative ascending, and Civil Rights Movements. Gender and race has been the target of numerous discriminatory laws that have persisted throughout time. Two major films have portrayed the endurance of women on issues of gender discrimination and discriminatory laws. The Color Purple, based on the same novel by Alice Walker, discusses the suffering of African American women through anti-feminism. On the other hand, The Help, based also on the novel by Kathryn Stockett, deliberates the struggle of African American women during the Jim Crow Laws in the 20th century. Five points comparison between the two films can demonstrate the resistance of African American women anti-feminism and statutory laws. One of the main deprived characteristics among the main characters in these two films (Celie, The Color Purple; Aibileen, The Help) is their level of intelligence. Intelligence often has been demeaned when it comes to women. Thus living in a male-dominant society, many women since the early 1900s have fought for their rights to acquire constitutional laws that give them rights to live freely and openly in our society.
